Season 3 Opener

Near the two-year anniversary of the original Atlantic Buoy, on 16 July we placed two AIS-equipped drifting buoys 60 NM off Virginia Beach, VA. Like the earlier Gulf Buoy, these buoys can detect and process AIS messages from nearby ships. We put in two buoys "Calvin" and "Hobbes" hoping we'd get to see how they disperse over time, but Hobbes went silent and may be lost. Calvin is doing well and has detected quite a few ships at up to 22 NM away. Enjoy following Calvin on it's journey.
